Spanish actor, Karla Sofia Gascon, star of Emillia Perez was the first transgender woman nominated for best actress at the oscars 2025

However, at the end of January, some old tweets were resurfaced by many people, the tweets contained offensive comments of marginalized communities. In one of her reported statements (which were translated from Spanish). She called George Floyd a “drug addict swindler”. She also frequently posted about Islam, calling it “a hotbed of infection,” and more.

After tweets were resurfaced, Gascon was not seen at the red carpet despite her nomination. However, she responded to many statements and had an hour long interview, managed by herself without Netflix’s involvement. Her chances of winning best actress was almost impossible, and the award was won by Mikey Madison for her performance in “Anora,”

Many of Gascon’s costars expressed their disappointment towards her comments, including Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana. Emilia Pérez director Jacques Audiard also stated that what Gascon has written was inexcusable and he “hasn’t spoken to her” since. Fortunately, the controversy did not affect her co-stars, with Zoe Saldana winning ‘Best Supporting Actress’.

The controversy of Karla Sofia Gascon overshadowed much of the 2025 Oscars, fueling debate about accountability, redemption, and cancel culture in hollywood. While Gascon remains a trailblazer for transgender representation, her backlash over the past few weeks have drowned her achievements, it hurt her chances of winning, showing how past actions can resurface at any moment, the comments she had posted were full of rude, offensive content which should have never been put on the internet in the first place.
